After viral infections, a certain proportion of sufferers develop post-viral symptoms, which persist well beyond the acute stage of the disease. These include pronounced fatigue, muscle pain, inflammation or neurocognitive problems. These often regress after a few weeks. In many sufferers, however, symptoms can last for months, become chronic and lead to significant limitations.
Post-viral symptoms also occur as a long-term consequence of an infection with the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). Even in mild cases and younger sufferers, persistent post-viral fatigue can develop along with many other symptoms.
